Tell Governor Brown: Support the California Small Business Investment Protection Act (AB 525)

AB 525 – The California Small Business Investment Protection Act – helps ensure more fair relations between franchisors and franchisees.

The purpose of the bill is to allow these small business owners to operate their stores with greater flexibility. and peace of mind. With greater protections from unfair corporate practices and costs, AB525 would:

  • PROTECT FRANCHISEES: The bill would protect franchisees' ability to pass their business on to an heir or to sell it to qualified buyers.
  • PREVENT UNFAIR TERMINATION: AB 525 would bar termination unless the franchisee has failed to substantially comply with their franchisee agreement.
  • ENSURE FAIR COMPENSATION: AB 525 requires franchisors to pay franchisees for supplies, equipment and other items when they terminate or refuse to renew a franchise. This means that franchisees don't lose every dollar they invested if franchisors take away their businesses.
